PELHAM, NY–This year, the fifth graders from Hutchinson School are moving up to middle school. For most students, this is a big change. Students have many feelings about the transition from elementary school to middle school and what this means for them.
For the fifth graders of Hutchinson School, June will be the last month before transitioning to middle school. The fifth graders will be going to a new school next year. This is a big change for the students. Some have been going to elementary school for six years and this transition to a new school will be different.
Middle school has harder work and more homework, you have to transition between classes and manage a locker. There are also more students at the middle school, and in some ways, the rules are stricter. But for some students, middle school will be more free. You can walk around school without being in a line, talk in the halls, leave at the bell without being dismissed, manage your own work, and take home your laptop. Whether middle school gives students more or less freedom, it is still a big change. Middle school means you are growing and maturing. Middle school will be a new challenge for the graduating class of Hutchinson. Everyone will have a different experience, and each fifth grader has different thoughts and opinions about different things.
IT shared, “I’m pretty excited for middle school because all four of the schools will be combined, and I have some friends in the other schools and I’m going to meet them.”
When asked what SO was going to miss when at the middle school, she replied with, “My friends that are in younger grades, the privileges we have, and probably our teachers.”
Overall, the fifth graders are graduating with plenty of opinions and feelings. Are you excited for middle school?
