HUTCHINSON SCHOOL–Hutchinson Elementary’s three 5th grade classes have recently undertaken a special project. They’ve been studying the ancient civilizations of the Americas hundreds of years ago. They’ve been studying the Aztec, the Inca and the Maya!
From almost the beginning of the year, the 5th grade has been learning everything possible about the 3 ancient civilizations, not only in Social Studies, but in Spanish too (which made sense because the Incas lived in South America). Their special project has been writing a research paper about their chosen civilization with a full map and lastly creating artifacts meant to look like they were from their time.
CF reported, “I am not enjoying this project because I’m bad at art and you have to make stuff.”
SC shared, “I did start my research project and I only have my report and index cards about my artifacts left to make.”
LU described, “I think it’s a bunch of fun and especially the creation part, and it gives me a chance to get my creativity out.”
Every artifact made needs to be significant to whichever civilization is chosen for each person. The necessary details in both the artifacts and research paper can feel very demanding. The research paper requires informational details like when and where the people existed, their accomplishments, an illustrated map with key, a book source as well as the Internet, and even a bibliography! For the artifacts, they need to be as realistic as possible, as flawless as possible, and also need to be either a part of daily life or of some significance to their culture.
This loaded project is due today, March 19, annually, and every year new, creative artifacts come into the spotlight. However, these special objects need to be presented, which may be very stressful for some. Many people have a fear of public speech, so this can be worrisome. But with a solid knowledge of their creations, presenting can be fun!
